Quick question for the fam. Why is every generation of the EVO sooo much more than the STi? It’s seems like a bare minimum $5k more than Subbies of similar vintage.

Supply maybe?

You’d have to look up production numbers but the Subarus seem to be nearly everywhere compared to the Evo

Because running EVOs are rare and therefore command a premium.

Are they unreliable or something? Even EVO VIIIs still crazy premiums. Lucky to find a good one around $15k

Thinking that has something to play into it. Maybe people actually hold onto them longer as well so when they post them they know they can put up ludicrous prices.

Well the issue is that the EVOs were nearly a decade ahead with the performance components and below contemporaries in other components. They also make substantially more power than what even the owner thinks so they are already stressed and tend to have stressful lives. The lack of reliability is that you can’t guess what will fail until you own the car and see it fail (cheapest industry parts in the same vehicle as rally ready parts). Hence why once you start working on an EVO you don’t part with it. Known evils vs unknown evils plus a steep learning curve.

That said, if you are the type that doesn’t mind $200 to $600 once or twice a year over spending $220 a month on a car payment, and want a car that will give you a full on relationship and lifelong bond, the EVO is beyond rewarding. It’s honestly a commitment, so you have to be in it for the long haul.

I think this is a big part of it, supply and demand. The Evo isn’t made or meant to be made on the same scale. They also often have a lot more power on tap...

The AWD system in the EVO is generally recognized to be more advanced, it also comes with a DCT as an optional transmission which ups the price.
